The Chinese Traditional Villages Preservation and Development Study Center is approved by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Society and Tianjin University. It is a national traditional village preservation and study institution that is supported by the Feng Jicai Research Institute of Arts and Literature of Tianjin University.

Chinese traditional villages are villages that have both tangible and intangible cultural heritage and have relatively high historical, cultural, artistic, social and economic values. Traditional villages carry the essence of traditional Chinese culture and are the cultural heritage from the agricultural civilization that cannot be recreated. China has an agricultural history of more than 5,000 years. Villages are the origin of the agricultural life, and are still the home to the production and life activities of thousands of farmers. Villages have splendid historical legacy and rich folk culture. They are the reflection of the essence and spirit of Chinese ethnic groups and an important part of Chinese culture. However, with the rapid development of modernization, urbanization and industrialization, the number of natural villages in China has decreased from 3,630,000 to 2,710,000 from 2000 to 2010. 900,000 natural villages disappeared in ten years. The disappearance of traditional villages is only the vanishing of various historical creations, cultural landscape, rural architecture, and the material legacy from agricultural times. At the same time, a large amount of folk culture that is affiliated to villages, intangible cultural heritages, as well as the locations where minority ethnic groups gather are on the verge of collapse. In April 2012, at the suggestion of Mr. Feng Jicai, the government decided to ask the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Ministry of Culture, State Administration of Cultural Heritage and Ministry of Finance to jointly launch the campaign to conduct surveys to identify Chinese traditional villages. In such context, Mr. Feng Jicai proposed to establish the Chinese Traditional Villages Preservation and Development Study Center, which is aimed at further encouraging the preservation and development of traditional villages.

The center adopts the director-in-charge system under the instruction of an expert committee with directors, deputy directors and special secretaries. There are five functional departments — academic committee, liaison department, research department, books and magazines department and information department.

The center plays the roles of conducting academic studies, data storage, organizing projects, promoting academic exchange, publicity and education. It conducts special studies on issues related to traditional village research, keeps a record of village statistics, carries out academic surveys, receives academic visits, holds academic conferences, promotes achievements and results, disseminates knowledge and theories on traditional villages in various means, and provide trainings and research classes.

The Chinese Traditional Villages Preservation and Development Study Center was established on June 4, 2013.
